Somatic Expression: Inhabiting and Celebrating the Body of Life
March 1, 2008 The five universal languages of the body are:
These five languages are technologies that belong to your body, ways you naturally sense, feel, know and express yourself. In Somatic Expression, you learn to become more fluent with these languages to explore your inner landscape and improvise your own movement. There is no “right” way to move your body in this approach. Anatomical principles, departure points and conceptual pathways are used to stimulate your natural intelligence and body wisdom. The process-oriented approach of Somatic Expression encourages participation at all levels, supporting diversity, self-acceptance, pleasure and freedom. Somatic Expression is a synthesis of somatic movement education and the expressive arts developed by Jamie McHugh. It has been used in a variety of settings with people worldwide. Various teachers have inspired the development of Somatic Expression, including Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen (Body-Mind Centering), Emilie Conrad (Continuum), and Anna Halprin (Life/Art Dance). In this workshop, you will explore the basics of somatic expression to nurture daily well-being. The five languages are simple and pleasurable tools for counteracting the stresses and strains of living in modern times. We will also dance, sing, and play as a way to celebrate the wisdom of the body. No experience necessary; this workshop is suitable for people at all levels. |
