“To stop your mind does not mean to stop the activities of the mind. It means your mind pervades your whole body." - Shunryu Suzuki, Zen Master

SEAM Leadership Training

Somatic Explorations/Active Meditations (SEAM)

2013 Dates:

January 24-27, March 14-17, May 16-19 and September 12-15
The intensives begin at 1pm on Thursday and end at 1pm on Sunday

Increasingly, people are seeking ways to find peace and calmness in the instability of the world through meditation. People are also seeking ways to get into their bodies and out of their heads through movement.

A seam is a point of convergence that connects distinctive threads.

Somatic Explorations/Active Meditations (SEAM) bring together the worlds of somatics and meditation, sound and silence, movement and stillness. SEAM is designed to develop your proprioception (your body’s self-perception) through anatomical imagery and the five technologies of somatic experience (breath, vocalization, contact, movement and stillness). With Somatic Explorations/Active Meditations, you find your inner compass and are able to move from the inside out more efficiently and pleasurably; cultivate more grounding, calm and clarity; and deepen your own inner bodily dialogue. This work is for every-body, applicable to all age groups and all levels of physical conditioning. If you can sit in a chair and lie down on the floor, you can do Somatic Explorations/Active Meditations!

For a more theoretical overview of SEAM, see this article

This comprehensive training will give you a thorough understanding of the principles, practices and applications of Somatic Explorations/Active Meditations. It is designed for people who want to facilitate somatic awareness, movement meditations, and self-expression in their work. Therapists, fitness coaches, yoga and movement teachers of all types will benefit from this step-by-step integrative and sustainable approach to the soma and its expression. The SEAM Leadership Training will give you the tools and resources for your own personal practice as well as preparing you to guide individuals and groups.

The SEAM training is conducted in a series of four-day intensives quarterly, with time in-between sessions to practice at-home assignments and integrate the material. The intensives are held at the coastal community of Sea Ranch, 3 hours north of San Francisco. The combination of the natural environment and the residential immersion is conducive to accelerated learning in a spacious manner. Each intensive is a combination of theory, practice, dialogue and application, with the group limited to 8 people to maximize individual attention. Two individual sessions are also included with Jamie outside of class time for more individual resourcing.
